De Nederlandse kunstschilder Han Snel (1925-1998) woonde en werkte gedurende een halve eeuw op het Indonesisch eiland Bali.
De auteur, die reeds sinds 1983 op het eiland Bali woont, was een vriend van de kunstenaar. Er bestond nog geen biografie van Han Snel. Dit boek vult deze leemte aan.
Deze biografie begint met zijn jeugd in Scheveningen, zijn belevenissen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en zijn gedwongen vertrek naar Indonesië als dienstplichtige soldaat.
De lezer krijgt ook een inkijk in de woelige jaren van de jonge Indonesische Republiek en hoe Han Snel dit alles overleefde en een beroemd artiest werd.
De informatie voor dit boek komt uit de mond van Han Snel zelf, die uitgebreid geïnterviewd werd door de auteur. Een tweede informatiebron is Siti Snel, zijn weduwe, die nog steeds op Bali woont.

The Dutch painter Han Snel (1925-1998) lived for half a century on the Indonesian island of Bali.
The author who has been living in Bali since 1983 was a friend of the artist. There was no biography of Han Snel yet. This book fills this gap.
The author outlines Han Snel’s life that begins with his youth in Scheveningen, his experiences during World War II and his forced departure to Indonesia as a conscripted soldier.
The reader also gets a glimpse of the often turbulent years of the young Indonesian Republic and how Han survived it all and became a respected and famous artist.
The author has conducted extensive interviews with Han Snel. A second source of information is Siti Snel, his widow, who is still living in Bali.
